Currently the next generation of Metop-SG satellites is under development, which will include the newly developed navigation system “Lion-Neo” by Airbus Defence and Space. This navigation receiver will help to track and steer the satellite on its polar orbit and allow for enhanced accuracy in the measurement of data. It uses two RF frontend filters developed and manufactured by Wainwright Instruments. These filters allow the receiver to use the GPS or GALILEO navigation systems independently or simultaneously to enhance accuracy. Following on from the EUMETSAT Polar System programme (Metop), this next generation will secure the continuation of meteorological observations from the polar orbit during the timeframe from 2022 to 2043.
