GSM: Technology and Filter Requirements

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) represents the foundational second-generation (2G) digital mobile standard and remains a global presence as an essential legacy technology despite technological shifts. The technology primarily operates in the frequency bands around 900 MHz (P-GSM/E-GSM) and 1800 MHz (DCS 1800), utilizing a narrowband TDMA method with channel spacing of 200 kHz. In modern network planning, GSM is now at the center of massive refarming processes, where spectral resources are being reallocated for LTE and 5G NR while basic voice services and simple data transmissions (GPRS/EDGE) must be maintained.

Wainwright Instruments manufactures high-precision RF filters for these demanding transition scenarios, tailored precisely to the requirements of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). Coexistence is particularly critical: in refarming environments, filters must be extremely steep to protect the narrowband GSM signal from the significantly more powerful broadband signals of adjacent 4G/5G carriers. Our solutions minimize intermodulation and ensure spectral purity, which is indispensable for the stable operation of legacy devices, emergency systems, and industrial M2M applications in an increasingly dense radio environment.

Typical Deployment Scenarios:

GSM filters from Wainwright function as vital barriers in networks that must guarantee absolute reliability of basic services despite migration to newer standards.

  • Legacy Base Stations (BTS): In existing 2G networks, our filters secure precise channel selection and suppress out-of-band emissions to maintain stable voice quality in regions with UMTS/LTE gaps.
  • Refarming & Migration Projects: We provide critical filter solutions to suppress interference between GSM and encroaching LTE services (e.g., in Band 3 or Band 8) to enable smooth spectrum reallocation.
  • Critical Infrastructure & Smart Metering: Many utility companies use GSM-based modems for remote reading; our filters protect these high-sensitivity receiver paths against overloading from neighboring 5G base stations.
  • Automotive & eCall Fallback: Since many vehicle manufacturers use GSM as the final fallback layer for emergency call systems, our RF solutions ensure signal integrity in telematics modules throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle.
  • Railway Radio (GSM-R): Specifically for the 876-880 MHz (uplink) and 921-925 MHz (downlink) ranges, we offer filters that shield safety-critical communication from interference caused by public LTE networks in the 800 MHz range.
  • Industrial M2M Communication: Existing factory equipment relying on GPRS data transmission requires our filters to operate without interference in electromagnetically burdened production environments.
  • Border Regions & Roaming Scenarios: In areas with varying network priorities, our filters provide necessary selectivity to minimize cross-border interference between different national GSM networks.
  • Test & Laboratory Measurements: To validate components in refarming scenarios, our high-precision filters serve as reference components to characterize the behavior of legacy hardware under extreme adjacent channel conditions.

Suitable Filter Categories for Mobile Communications / GSM

The narrowband nature of GSM requires filter solutions that feature exceptionally high selectivity combined with minimal insertion loss.

Band Pass Filters

Our GSM Band Pass filters enable excellent selection for classic bands such as GSM 900 and DCS 1800. They are specifically optimized for use in base station front-ends, combining extremely steep rejection skirts with high thermal stability. In refarming environments, these filters are indispensable for cleanly isolating the narrow 200 kHz grid from adjacent LTE resource blocks. The mechanical precision of our cavity resonators ensures that 3GPP spectral masks are strictly maintained even at high transmit power, significantly reducing intermodulation in multi-carrier systems. Manufacturers of infrastructure components benefit from the high power handling and long-term stability of our filters.

Manually Tunable Band Pass Filters

For maintenance tasks and troubleshooting in aging 2G infrastructure, we offer manually tunable Band Pass filters covering the range from 800 MHz to 2 GHz. Via high-precision mechanical tuning elements, the center frequency can be adjusted exactly to the respective GSM channel to isolate local interference sources with frequency precision. This flexibility is invaluable for field technicians as it allows for site characterization without swapping numerous fixed filters. The robust construction guarantees long-term reproducibility of the filter curve even under harsh conditions at the radio mast.

Digitally Tunable Band Pass Filters

Electronically controllable filters support modern test environments and agile gateways that need to switch between different GSM bands. Via digital interfaces such as SPI or I2C, filter parameters can be adjusted in real-time to the respective channel allocation, which is particularly advantageous when researching Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). Our digitally tunable filters combine digital control precision with the necessary RF quality and are optimized for use in test environments and development systems. They enable rapid reconfiguration of automated test rigs without manual hardware swaps, supporting efficient quality assurance processes in manufacturing.

Band Reject Filters / Notch Filters

Our GSM notch filters serve to eliminate narrowband interfering signals that could impair the sensitivity of high-sensitivity base station receivers. Especially when coexisting with new LTE carriers in the 900 MHz range, these filters provide critical protection for receiver front-ends. They feature extremely deep stopband attenuation with negligible impact on the GSM desired signal. This prevents the saturation of low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) by strong external signals and ensures maximum voice quality and range for the radio cell even in RF-burdened urban areas. By using our notch filters, the robustness of the infrastructure against external RF influences is massively increased.

Manually Tunable Band Reject Filters / Notch Filters

Frequency-tunable notch filters provide a flexible solution for interference suppression directly on-site. System integrators use manual tuning to respond immediately to new interference sources in the GSM spectrum, such as those caused by poorly performing broadband services in the neighborhood. These filters allow for immediate signal quality optimization without time-consuming hardware swaps. The mechanical construction is optimized for frequent use in mobile test setups and provides stable stopband performance across wide temperature ranges.

Digitally Tunable Band Reject Filters / Notch Filters

In intelligent network management systems, digitally tunable notch filters enable an automated response to dynamic interference scenarios. Controlled by monitoring algorithms, these filters can dynamically mask interfering signals in real-time to maintain Quality of Service (QoS) for legacy voice services. Their integration into automation concepts for radio optimization allows for autonomous radio optimization of entire sites during the refarming phase. Thanks to remote controllability, operators can adjust filter characteristics centrally, significantly reducing operating costs and massively increasing overall system reliability.

Monoplexer / Diplexer / Duplexer / Triplexer

Combining GSM with LTE or UMTS on a shared antenna requires high-performance multiplexers with extremely high isolation. Our duplexers for the 900 MHz band are optimized for highest power handling and minimum PIM (Passive Intermodulation), which is mandatory for capacity expansion at multi-standard sites. Triplexer solutions are used when GSM signals must be combined with Band 3 (1.8 GHz) and Band 7 (2.6 GHz). Wainwright Instruments manufactures these components with the highest precision to ensure that legacy radios can develop their full performance despite proximity to high-power services. Our multiplexers are optimized for use in base stations and industrial infrastructure applications.

Absorptive Filters

Absorptive filters play a crucial role in the transmission infrastructure of GSM base stations to protect amplifier linearity and effectively terminate harmonics. Rather than reflecting unwanted harmonics back to the power amplifier, these filters safely convert them into heat, preventing reflection damage. This is particularly important for older GSM hardware to increase component longevity during the migration phase. Our absorptive filters are designed for high continuous power and are used in macro cells and measurement setups to improve signal purity during compliance testing.
